We start our writing block each day with a little bit of grammar. This week we're learning about compound sentences. A compound sentence is two complete sentences combined with a comma and a coordinating conjunction. There are seven coordinating conjunctions. FANBOYS is an acronym that helps us remember them...for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so!
On Tuesdays Ms. Stacey visits us for our weekly guidance lesson. This week we got to know each other a little better. We each wrote down a fact about ourselves and then we had to guess who it belonged to! We love learning new facts about our friends.
We've started book clubs! During this time we all read with different teachers to meet our reading needs. In my book club we are reading the Frindle. Today we read the blurb on the back, made predictions about the book, and got to know the main character Nick Allen.
Our current science unit is all about human body systems. Last week we learned how bones, muscles, and tendons work together to make us move. Today we learned how light interacts with the cornea and retina of our eyeball to help us create a picture of the world!
This year the town is updating the Crested Butte Community Compass. Since fourth graders learn all about the state of Colorado, they naturally came to us for help...plus kids have the best ideas. Today we got a briefing on our mission. Over the next few weeks we'll examine the elements and core values below and make suggestions and goals for town planning.
land use / culture / environmental stewardship / parks and recreation open space and trails / affordable housing / transportation / economic development
Place value is a big topic in fourth grade. The cool thing about our number system is that it's all based on the number ten! Ten is a really friendly number to work with and once you understand how the system works, it's like have the keys to the castle for harder math.
Check out this cool video for some place value clarification! Last week we practiced math workshop. During math, we usually have a short whole group lesson and then rotate through different tasks depending on what we each need for the skill we're learning. That's a lot of moving pieces, so we practiced it all with fun activities first! Math Learning ReflectionPattern Blocks and TangramsMath GamesWe've been practicing our digital citizenship as we start to incorporate technology into our daily routine. We learned all about media and how we can make media choices everyday. Those choices can help keep us safe online and also keep us healthy with technology balance.
You can practice with the Google Interland game at home! In science we're exploring human body systems. Today we made a robot finger model to show the relationship between bones, muscles, and tendons. Be sure to check them out tonight!
