Teaching Philosophy
I teach because I love the process of exploration and discovery. I believe that an effective teacher creates an environment conducive to learning, inspires students to value learning, and plans to teach for the variety of learning styles in the classroom. Above all, I believe that an effective teacher values each student as an individual and strives to give each student a love for exploration and discovery.
I believe that it is a teacher's job to create a safe, caring, engaging environment in which students can grow and mature intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. My classroom is a positive place where children can share their ideas, feel comfortable making mistakes, and love to explore and discover. My classroom is a community in which the students' opinions are valued with the democratic ideal, students take responsibility for their actions, and students are accountable for their learning. I believe that part of creating a safe learning environment is always remembering to praise effort. A consistent, positive environment produces more growth and the desire to keep learning.
I teach because I want to inspire students to value learning. I am a lifelong learner; I love to read, take new classes, and let curiosity drive my learning. I believe that students' interests and curiosities should drive project based learning and exploration in the classroom. It is the teacher's job to utilize the curriculum and the standards to give students a foundation in each discipline. With this foundation the teacher can then inspire the students to dig deeper and discover interests across the disciplines.
I believe that it is a teacher's job to differentiate all lessons to meet students' individual needs and help them succeed to their fullest potential. My classroom is a busy place where students are perpetually engaged. Group lessons are a time to introduce topics and share ideas. Students utilize small group time and workshop time to collaborate with peers and work through problems. The teacher's job is to facilitate learning and thinking. Instead of lecturing, I create activities and projects and work with students to meet their needs. I simplify and explain when students are struggling, and I ask questions and challenge when students are ready for the next step.
Children are growing and changing everyday. It is a teacher's job to facilitate that process and challenge students to grow more. As a teacher I embrace change and know that my teaching practices will change with each class and with each new year. I challenge myself to become a better teacher everyday because I believe I should be held to the same high expectations I have for my students.
