We've been subtracting mixed number this week. It's a tricky concept when you add in regrouping. Check out this video to see how we tackle these problems. Today we dove into our Colorado textbook, The Colorado Story.
We're learning all about the five geographical regions of our state: The Mountain, The High Plains, The Western Slope, The San Luis Valley, and The Front Range As the holidays arrive, life gets crazy - that means, fourth grade gets crazy. We're taking some time to reset as a class. We're refocusing our classroom contract, resetting our behavior, and paying attention to the little things...because the little things make a big difference. In Tibetan Buddhist culture, monks practice the ritual of creating sand mandalas. They are beautiful works of art. They are symmetrical (math), detailed (focus), and centered around specific values (Titan traits). We took some time to start our own! We listened to music, focused on a word that resonated with us, and created symmetrical designs...to be colored tomorrow.
Now that we've learned all the zones with Ms. Stacey, we're learning strategies to help us get from one zone to another. Check it out. This one is called: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Use your senses to ground yourself! This one is called six sided breathing! This one is called five finger breathing.
Good thing you always have your fingers with you! Today we looked at math in the real world! Often it feels like we're learning things we'll never use again, but we love when all of our skills come together and we can see the application.
Can you double this banana bread recipe? How about quadruple it? Ask us how we did it! This week we learned about landslides. If you owned a house in a landslide prone town, you'd want some protection. We brainstormed ideas for protecting our house and minimizing the damage of a landslide. Ask us what we came up with!
Today is art we explored the properties of oil pastels. We learned at our own pace, tried different methods, and created night sky images in our sketchbooks. We'll use this knowledge moving forward as we embark on a big constellation art/STEM collaboration!
