SWEET MATH PROBLEMS BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS

12/20/2019

Three Act Tasks are a fun way to get us thinking outside the normal math box.  Today we worked our multiplication skills with a sweet question about some Krispy Kreme Doughnuts!

Act 1:

What do you notice about the photos below?  What do you wonder?
We want to know how many donuts are in the box!

Act 2:

We needed to know how many donuts are in each row and column and if there are layers! Check out the slides below for the information and a challenge.

Act 3:

Finally, after a lot of math, we get the reveal.
Check out this news report to see if your math is correct!
Big math happening here!

INFINITE AMAZEMENT WITH BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR

12/13/2019

Baking soda and vinegar produce a fascinating and fun chemical reaction with seemingly endless possibilities.  This week, our scientist wondered what would happen in a jar with a lid that was not screwed on.  We were unsure if there would be enough pressure to blow the lid off or if it would just slide off like lava.  We also explored the difference between apple cider vinegar and regular white vinegar that we've used in the past.  Check it out below!

ENDLESS GRATITUDE

12/12/2019

Just a few more examples of the excellent and thoughtful letters of gratitude we've written!

SUBTRACTION WONDER

12/11/2019

Check out the video! What do you notice? What do you wonder? Is there a pattern? Can you prove this pattern for every three digit number? What about two digit or four digit numbers? What numbers don't work? Can you prove it? We tried this today with partners. Can you figure it out?

E. COLI AND ROMAINE LETTUCE :(

12/9/2019

Today we learned about the recent E. Coli outbreak in Romaine lettuce.  E. Coli is a bacteria found in raw meat, however, it can also be spread to vegetables and other crops through irrigation water.  You may have seen the warnings in the grocery store.  The outbreak caused a gastrointestinal foodborne illnesses that takes between two and eight days to show symptoms after eating the affected food.  The first case of the Romaine outbreak was reported on September 24th and the last one was luckily reported on November 18th.  We are glad that's over!

YOUTUBE AGE RESTRICTIONS

12/7/2019

Picture
This week our reporter shared all the information about the newly created YouTube age restrictions. The timing could not have been better because we are feeling the impacts here in the classroom. YouTube was getting in trouble for breaching privacy and using kids personal information for advertisement placement. In order to try to protect kids and help their image, YouTube is now enforcing a strict age restriction of 13 and up for all YouTube content. YouTube is consequently now blocked on all student accessed school computers.  We can see both sides of the argument, but we're missing music videos and drawing tutorials.

FRACTIONS

12/6/2019

Math workshop is one of our favorite times of the day.  We love the chance to work with our friends through difficult problems and share our thinking.  Our current unit is all about fractions we're learning new information at a rapid rate.  It's amazing.
