A HISTORY AND SCIENCE KIND OF DAY

12/10/2014

We started off dissecting owl pellets in Environmental Ed.  How cool!
Check out the tiny skulls.  Can you figure out where each bone goes?

Big Mac Hurting as Customers Get Picker

Next, we heard from the historian.  Ike shared an article about touch screen ordering and customer preference at McDonald's.  McDonald's specializes in consistent delivery of quick and affordable food.  Custom orders are more complicated and cost more money.  But not everyone likes their burgers the same.  When you're looking for something a little special or you really don't feel like the pickles you might shop somewhere else.  In order to make their customers happy, McDonald's will try out the "Create Your Taste" touchscreen ordering process at 2,000 of its 14,000 US locations.  Thanks Ike!

Finally, Jack shared his super cool experiment.  It tied in well with the density columns we made with Julie Wille.  First Jack combined water and oil.  We learned that water and oil definitely don't get along and the oil sits on top because it is lighter.  Next Jack helped us hypothesize what would happen if we added salt to the mixture.
Here's what we thought:
1. The salt will be suspended in between.
2. They will mix together.
3. The salt will dissolve.
4. The mixture will become clear.
5. The salt will make bubbles.

Here's what actually happened:

Looks like a lava lamp!  The oil gets trapped in the spaces in the salt and slowly wiggles it's way to the top where it belongs as the lightest liquid.
Can you guess what happened when we shook it really hard?  It involves the word dissolve.
