A LOOK AT LITERACY IN OUR CLASSROOM

The literacy hour in our classroom is BUSY.  We are all doing different tasks and working on different skills.  Here's a basic look at what happens on a first grade morning:

​Reading with Miss Kylie
We meet in small groups at the guided reading table.  We read books, talk about books, practice spelling, look at word families, and learn to love reading!

​Computers
A few times a week we use the Chromebooks in our classroom.  We use Raz-Kids to read just-right books and take comprehension quizzes.

​Reader Response
Everyday we write about reading and about books. We tell what happened in books, we make connections to other books, and we think about how books relate to our lives.

​Read to Self
This is when we actually get to curl up with a good book and read.  We're working on picking just-right books at our level, but also books that interest us and keep us curious.

Centers
Here we do a variety of activities ranging from phonics to spelling to social studies and sometimes even a little math review!
