EYE TRICKS

2/2/2018

We love a visit from our favorite scientist, especially when we learn about our own bodies!

PROBLEM

Do your eyes always see the things you are looking at?
Picture

PROCEDURE

Get an index card.  Using a pencil, on the right side of it draw an X.  Three inches away on the left side make a large dot.  Hold the card a few inches from your face.  Cover your right eye with your other hand.  Slowly move the card away from your fact always looking at the X.  What happens to the dot?

MATERIALS

Index Card, Pencil, Eyes

HYPOTHESES

A. The dot suddenly looks like an X. (1)
B. The dot appears to grow in size. (1)
C. The dot totally disappears. (15)
D. The dot appears to get smaller in size. (1)

CONCLUSION

The dot disappears.  Each eye has a blind spot.  There's a spot in front of each eye that you cannot see.  BUT, here's why you don't walk around with blind spots in front of you.  If you have both eyes open the blind spots are different for each eye so they don't get noticed.  Ask us about the other cool things we learned about out eyes too!

Today we did an owl art project in preparation for Owling Night next Tuesday!  We used continuous line to create these very intricate and unique owls.  Check out how cool!!

Party Planned Wednesday for Aspen's Olympic Bound Athletes
Picture
Ana shared an article about the incredible amount of athletes going to the Olympics from the valley.  Did you know this tiny town is sending six athletes!? That’s amazing. Earlier this week Aspen hosted a send off party to honor the athletes and their families and wish them luck in the coming weeks.  There are two going for half pipe skiing, two for alpine skiing, and two for cross country skiing.  More information about these athletes can be found here.

Are you tired yet?  Whew.  We even had time for a secret reader.  Beck's mom, Miss Kelly, shared a great book about kindness and sharing.  You should check out The Snow Beast!  It's all about a little town that relies on the beast to help set up the snow festival every year.  But this year the tools needed to get everything ready are missing!  Turns out the snow beast had them, but he just needed to do a little fixing up around his home.  With a little exploration and a big misunderstanding everyone is friends in the end and celebrates the snow festival in serious style this year!  Thanks Miss Kelly.
