I loved getting to meet with everyone during conferences and share the amazing growth we've made in first grade. I got great feedback and one thing that came up over and over again was spelling our high FREAKY words. We're now excellent readers and can read those words like pros, but when it comes to spelling we're still working hard to get them right every time. There's a reason they are called FREAKY words and it's because they don't follow the usual phonics and spelling rules we know and love so well, so we just need lots of practice.
There's lots of ways to make spelling fun and here's just a few we use in the classroom and you can use at home too with our Spelling List!
If you're looking for more, check out this awesome presentation put together all about high FREAKY words by our awesome reading teacher Kelly OBranovic. She's a reading professional!
