HIGH "FREAKY" WORDS

3/9/2016

I loved getting to meet with everyone during conferences and share the amazing growth we've made in first grade.  I got great feedback and one thing that came up over and over again was spelling our high FREAKY words.  We're now excellent readers and can read those words like pros, but when it comes to spelling we're still working hard to get them right every time.  There's a reason they are called FREAKY words and it's because they don't follow the usual phonics and spelling rules we know and love so well, so we just need lots of practice.
There's lots of ways to make spelling fun and here's just a few we use in the classroom and you can use at home too with our Spelling List!

Pick 6 words and race to see which one wins. All you need is paper and dice.

Write the word one letter at a time to build the whole word.  All you need is paper and pencil.

For the more sensory child, write in paint.  All you need is a bag, paint (or sand), and a Q-Tip.
