SOUND WAVES, FOXES IN STROLLERS, AND APPLE BREAD

4/11/2018

How do sound waves travel?
Picture
Today we heard from the scientist of the week, Mr. Kai.  He taught all about the magical world of sound waves.  We thought maybe sound waves travel in water or along the ground or maybe even in cars, but it turns out they travel in invisible waves kind of like ripples in the water.  The bass (or really low) sound waves make the most movement and you can see them with just a few household items.  Kai used plastic wrap stretched tightly over two different sized mixing bowls.  He put some salt on the top of each bowl and held a speaker playing music really close.  Whenever the bass notes came through the salt started jumping around and dancing!  We could see sound happening right before our eyes.  So cool!  Thanks Kai!

The Fox in the Stroller: Pet Owners Gone Wild
Picture
Coco, the reporter of the week, shared a fascinating article about domesticating wild animals.  Even if a lost baby fox looks really cute there are many reasons you shouldn't take it home in a stroller.  First, it's mother might be nearby. Yikes! Second, that foxes babies would be wild and would have to be tamed all over again.  Third, wild animals know how to be wild and survive in the wild.  It's best to let them be.  Thank you Coco!

Then we celebrated our class party in style with some delicious Apple Bread.  But not without a little math, of course.  Check out the recipe below for a fun project at home.  Sidenote--it was too delicious to take pictures of once it was done :)

And to top it all off...Andrew read a super silly, fun,
Halloween-ish book called Funnybones.
