STATES OF MATTER

1/15/2016

Yesterday we learned all about the states of matter.  We learned how to define a solid, liquid, and gas.  We categorized different objects and substances.  And then we took a trip down to the molecular level! Pretty fancy stuff!

A SOLID has a definite shape and size.  The molecules are packed very tightly together. A solid only changes if you break it or an outside force acts upon it (like temperature or chemicals).  We talked about tables, trees, bricks, and bones.
A LIQUID has a definite size, but can change shape.  The molecules move more freely around.  A liquid takes the shape of any new container, but it doesn't grow or shrink unless you add some or take some away.  We talked about orange juice, milk, and water.
A GAS has no definite shape or size.  The molecules move around quickly to escape a container.  Gas is all around us, but we only see it when it has particles or water in it.  We talked about oxygen, carbon dioxide, smoke, and steam.
We demonstrated our knowledge of molecular structure with sequins. Needless to say, it was fun!
