WATER POLLUTION

On Earth Day we collected garbage from around the little playground and the front of the school. Unfortunately, we found a good amount.  We put all the trash into a graduated cylinder and filled it in with water (clear water from the tap). Today we revisited that cylinder and found quite a surprise.  The water is BLACK (really black) and smells TERRIBLE. What happens to all that litter on the playground?  Or litter in the water? Looks like water pollution is pretty serious business.  We talked about how the chemicals and toxins from our trash can end up in the soil, rivers, lakes, and oceans over time.  We'll definitely be picking up some more litter soon.  Yikes!
